The big day is approaching for Modimolle-based light heavyweight boxer Karabo Mokupi, popularly known as The Beast, who is billed to trade leather with the more experienced Gauteng brawler Dowayne Combrink.

The bout, set for six rounds, will be staged at Emperor’s Palace in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, on Sunday 24 February.

On paper, Mokupi goes into the fight as the underdog.

His opponent, Combrink has recorded 11 wins as a professional, two losses and one draw out of 14 bouts.

Out of his 11 wins, Combrink has won seven of these bouts on knockdowns, while the other four went the distance.

On the other hand, Mokupi has two wins and one loss out of his three pro bouts, with the two wins achieved on a knockout.

Trainer Donald Khoza said he was confident that his protégé, Mokupi, is capable of punching his way to an upset in the forthcoming bout.

“We are working round the clock in preparation for this fight. When we compare the records of these two boxers, Dowayne has the upper hand. However, that will not stop my boxer from unleashing his full potential,” he said.

Other three boxers from the local Obie’s Boxing and Fitness Academy will this weekend travel to Thohoyandou, to go through the licensing processes which would see them turn professional
boxers.

The three are Ntsako Myambo, Ramsy Hlungwani and Lopez Maluleke.

Khoza said the time for the three boxers as amateurs has long passed, and they were now ready to turn pro.
