Bela-Bela’s lightweight bodybuilder Thabo Mabotja is part of a contingent of weightlifters headed for the Bodybuilding World Cup starting on Saturday 7 September.

Mabotja the gold medallist said he was overwhelmed to hear the news that he has been selected to represent his country.

This past Saturday, 1 June, he won a gold medal and prizemoney of R2 000 during the International Bodybuilding Federation, Africa continental championships.

Mabotja was the runner-up during the championships held at the Lynnwood suburb of Pretoria.

He came position two in the 70 kg category.

He was taking part for the third tournament running.

During his first attempt at the continental championships, Mabotja said he came up sixth, and improved from this to fourth position during the second attempt.

It was his second position at the latest continental championships which earned him a place in the national squad headed for Italy.

He has been a bodybuilder since the year 2011.

In his working life Mabotja is a merchandiser in the retail marketplace.
