Centre manager spared jailtime

A senior manager of the Department of Higher Education was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment in connection with a case of corruption.

The sentence was suspended for five years on condition that the manager pays back a total amount of R16 500, inclusive of interest.

The official, Risenga Johannes Baloyi (58), was convicted when he appeared before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 23 January 2020.

Baloyi’s arrest and subsequent court appearance are a sequel to an incident that happened in 2017. According to The Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, Baloyi duped a job seeker into believing that he was in charge of the recruitment drive at the Department and that he can secure employment for a fee of R2500.

Maluleka said that a few months later, following the bribe on 15 January 2017, the victim became weary of the bribe and reported the matter to the police. The case was referred to The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation for further investigation.

Baloyi was then arrested on 21 May 2018 and made numerous court appearances until he was convicted for corruption.

By the time of going to print The Post was unable to establish if the manager has returned to his position at the Department.
