The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Waterberg Region led a protest march to the Modimolle SAPS, to raise concerns on the levels of crime which they felt are higher than acceptable.
The party invited members of the public to partake in the march, to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Station Commander on Friday, 7 February.
Demonstrators gathered outside Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall in Phagameng, then later left for downtown Modimolle to press home their demands.
At the Modimolle SAPS, a memorandum of demands was read out before it was handed over to the Station Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel Molokela Motadi.
Lt Col Motadi accepted the memorandum and told the protesters that the document will be forwarded to all relevant departments, and that a response will be given in due course.
As part of the grievances stipulated in the memorandum, the protesters demanded that the police act swiftly to remove drugs from the streets of Modimolle, and also end gangsterism in the community.
It was further requested that a 24-hour working emergency line be established, to allow easy access to the police in cases of emergencies.
The issue of lack of adequate police vehicles and personnel was also touched, as part of the grievances.
The protesters also demanded a corrupt-free police environment, charging that those who are suspected to be conniving with criminals must be investigated.
Part of the grievances also touched on allegations that some members of the SAPS were victimizing and verbally abusing vulnerable members of the community.
The Waterberg regional secretary of the EFF, Michael Mbedzi, warned that should the SAPS fail to respond within the stipulated timeframe, further protest action will be taken to ensure that the needs of the community are
addressed.
