Scores of parents at Bela-Bela’s Raeleng High School arrived on the premises on Monday 10 February, and ordered the principal and his staff to abandon their classes and proceed to the local circuit office.
The parents, under the leadership of the SGB, ordered the immediate halt to teaching and learning, against the backdrop of various safety incidents.
On the schools’ re-opening day on Wednesday 15 January, two learners were rushed to hospital after a ceiling caved in and fell on several learners.
SGB treasurer, Hosea Molekoa, said calls for urgent safety measures at the school had fallen on deaf ears.
The second incident was after a stone smashed through a classroom window, with flying glass injuring a Grade 9 learner.
Molekoa said the parents had resolved to keep the learners inside the schoolyard, until such time that their safety was guaranteed.
The situation at the school on Monday was of learners roaming the playgrounds, with scores of parents keeping a watchful eye.
Molekoa said activities such as the feeding scheme would not be disrupted, and that learners would be kept inside the premises until after school.
Sources at the school reported that the circuit manager, Julia Thabethe, was prevented from entering the premises on Monday.
She reportedly summoned the intervention of the police, but the parents refused to co-operate with officers, who left without any further incidents.
The situation remained the same on Tuesday.
