Residents of Vaalwater took to social media to pour out their grief about lives lost from a recent road accident.

The accident took place on the R33 between Vaalwater and Modimolle on Thursday 15 November.

According to the information received from the police, a truck transporting frozen chicken from Mookgophong was involved in a head-on collision with a minibus taxi from Vaalwater.

Modimolle police spokesperson, Warrant Officer James Findlay, said the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, apparently because of health-related reasons.

Findlay said an autopsy was still to decide the circumstances around the driver’s state of health at the time of the accident, be it a heart attack or stroke.

Four occupants from the taxi and the driver of the truck died at the scene.

The remaining 10 passengers from the taxi were injured and rushed to the FH Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle, for specialised medical attention.

The deceased were identified as Amos Nkwele Mongana (52), Leburu Essie Modise (32), Simon Modibe Modiba (52) and Mahabo Christopher Sebolai (39).

The police said the fifth deceased could not be identified until their next of keen had been found and informed.

Businessman Sebolai is the younger brother of former councillor and speaker of the Modimolle Local Municipality, Sechele.

He is survived by his mother Josephine, brothers Sechele, John and Philimon, as well as three daughters and a son aged between six and 18.

A case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
