Three residents of Bela-Bela took it upon themselves to tackle head-on challanges faced by both parents and learners at neighbouring farm schools.
Joseph Stewart, Allen Tsesane and Sibusiso Malupi joined hands and provided a total of 20 farm school learners with school uniforms, which included jerseys, shorts, skirts, socks and shoes.
Two farm schools were identified, namely Malebone Primary School and Moderspruit Primary School.
“We have noticed that among these children who do not have proper school uniforms, some are orphans, while others are raised by single parents,” Stewart said.
He said much work had been done — commendably so — to assist needy families in the townships, but that there were also pressing needs on the farmlands outside Bela-Bela.
The threesome belonged to no particular charity organisation, but chose to become active citizens in their individual capacity.
He said Malebone Primary School had a total intake of 174 learners, but only 125 of these reported on the first day of schooling.
To the contrary, overcrowding was reported at Moderspruit Primary School.
Headmistress Zanele Ledwaba said the school was waiting for mobile classrooms to help alleviate the problem.
