Modimolle’s Lekkerbreek Primary School is R20 000 richer, after outclassing its counterparts at the provincial stages of Limpopo Green Schools for The Earth Programme (LGSEP).

The overall winner was announced last week, with the Waterberg-based school coming out tops and outclassing schools from Sekhukhune, Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe.

The programme, initiated by the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), promotes sustainable environmental management as part of the broader National Development Plan (NDP).

Lekkerbreek Primary School advanced to the provincial leg of the competition in November last year after claiming R10 000 as the Waterberg region overall winner.

All regional winners were assessed in terms of how they manage their environmental affairs, and learners made their presentation in front of assessors from the department.

Educator Elizabeth Katjedi gave credit to the learners for giving the project their all, and further expressed gratitude to all involved parties for ensuring that the school environment is
well taken care of.

Katjedi said the school will not be allowed to enter again next year, but was urged to identity and mentor a school in the Waterberg region in terms of managing its environment.

Something notable is that the school has built a recycling drop-off site on the premises, where learners can store tins, paper, box and plastic bottles.
